Having to start new flock. Do I want another rooster?

I think getting a rooster is a good idea. They can be a hassle sometimes but they are usually worth it. Do you have someone to get a rooster from?

Curious as to why you have to get rid of your 22 chickens?

I didn't necessarily get rid of them. Divorce. I moved and I am building a new coop and run that should be ready by spring and I didn't want to really take any from my flock There's a lot of them that of been there for a while. There is one though we may bring over She's kind of a loner and she really likes my daughter but the goats and the cats all moved with me so I guess I can't have it all
It stinks too because just about a year and a half ago we built an awesome new coop in expanded run. They're happy there though

The last Roosters I've had were all Cockerels and never an issue with my Pullets or Hens. I guess it just depends..

I've always had roosters, and feel that the flock is incomplete without them. Because I worry about biosecurity, I never bring in adult birds, only chicks, and like to raise my own. Jerks happen, and they don't stay. Only nice cockerels and roosters stay here!
This is an opportunity! Pick birds of interesting breeds that you've wanted but never tried before. Salmon Favorelle roosters are almost always very nice, BTW.

I also agree a flock is incomplete without a rooster or two. I have had chickens 45 or so years . I can't imagine not having roosters. I have had a few nasty jerks, but most were polite and respectful . I have even had a few that were bad as cockerals but brought in line by the senior rooster and turned out fine.
I think they are beautiful, I love the crowing, and enjoy watching them take care of the flock. I think you should try to find a good rooster for your new flock.

It could be worse. At least were somewhat reasonable people so nothings vicious. And I know he will take good care of them.

And I am starting but with a whole whole lot more knowledge than I did the first time. Which was zero. So at least now I know exactly what I need As far as predator proofing ,space , ventilation and breeds I prefer. This particular area to I hear has a lot more predators. It seems like I would have more at my last house but somehow just talking to people And I've always known this area to have more bear sightings even though they're not that often. But more bobcat sightings I've already seen three foxes and been warned about the coyotes. We had all that at my last house but not quite as much And since the lot I live on has been empty for a year and a half I think the wildlife has gotten used to being in the area. I see deer that are not really afraid of me in my yard almost daily. And apparently the very top of my long long driveway has become a deer crossing Lol

So a rooster would also be beneficial to warn the girls. But I never count a rooster as predator proofing of any sort. I've seen mine give his girls warning and they take cover but even though he's bigger he's usually not as big as the predator

I've had roosters who were super vigilant about warning the girls of danger.... and I've had some who were the first to run and hide.
