Hello!
A couple of days ago I had a few hens attacked and killed by a hawk. A couple of the ladies survived. One of them seems to be having problems walking now though. She pulled past the 24 hour mark but went missing. I had assumed she was taken by a predator since she would have been an easy target. today she returned though! Shes still having issues walking like she's unstable. Her tail feathers fan out (like a broody hens tail usually looks), she kinda falls over and almost on her face when she starts taking a step, and today I noticed her leg seems to be turned inward.
I also noticed her breast bone feels like its protruding. I'm wondering if maybe something is broken or dislocated?

Welcome to BYC! Your hen could be suffering from shock. It can have some strange symptoms, but it shouldn't be brushed off. Shock can kill.

Treat her with some warm sugar water and electrolytes or just let her drink some warm Gatoraid or Pedialyte.

She could also be suffering from a spinal injury. You can try to treat that with vitamin E 400iu in some soft boiled egg, and toss in some vitamin B complex for leg strength.

In a predator attack, chickens can panic. I've watched chickens try to fly through solid walls to escape a predator. They can end up injuring themselves worse than from the attack itself. Look for greenish bruising on the legs and feet and even on the webbing between the toes. It can cause a lot of pain. One whole baby aspirin given twice a day can reduce pain and is perfectly safe for chickens.

Thank you for the replies! I'm thinking maybe a back injury. I did find some puncture wounds on her so I'm wondering if the hawk picked her up and she actually managed to escape.
One of my barred rocks was slightly injured but shes one that defends the other ladies. Last year she had a broken beak from a raccoon attack and rebroke it when the raccoon returned a few weeks later

I'm sorry for your losses:hugs

You found some puncture wounds on the hen that is limping? You've cleaned those out and they are healing o.k.?

The limping is concerning for sure, I'm hoping she may have sprained it during the attack and just needs time to recover. I would just keep watch on her and the wounds really well. If she's struggling to get to food/water, set her up in a kennel within the coop so she can rest for a few days.
