Our chickens are about 7 weeks old now and today, they were attacked by a hawk for the first time. All escaped but one. Her name is Nutmeg. She was pinned down by the Son of a B**** before it was hit away from her. I was not there to witness it, but I was told it had her for about 10 seconds or so. She is now SUPER lethargic and panting occationally, but there is no blood that we can find and no obvious deformities that we can feel. We took her inside to keep a close eye on her for now. She seems to not want to be away from me or my boyfriend at all. Every time we put her down anywhere, she cuddles right up to us almost immediately.

This is my first time having chickens and I really need help. Please try to answer with ANYTHING you can think of.
Thank you so much!!

Most hawk attacks leave puncture wounds. If you are sure she is not injured too bad, then the bird may live.
Give the bird a day or two and it will eventually get over the "shock" of the attack. It may not eat or drink much the first 24 hours after the attack. By day 3 the bird should start to eat and drink almost normal.
If the bird lives, it will be a good "hawk guardian' for the rest of the flock and may be develop a "paranoid" attitude from my experience with hawk attacks.

I have had a chicken that wanted to cuddle after a hawk attack. I would give it the attention, and it may help ease the shock.

Welcome, and sorry for the circumstances. She is probably in shock and for sure is terrified. Keep her calm and peaceful. A darkened crate or box would be a good place to put her. Hawks kill by impact as much as with their talons and beak. If the hawk was smaller in size the impact may have not been enough to seriously injure her. Good luck with her and understand that the hawk will be back now that it has found your flock. Protect your birds.
