I assume the Pen G is injected some place other then the wound? The skull is the only thing left there and we're not injecting there obviously. Tomorrow AM I will locate the Dakins and get some castor oil. It's hard to understand how castor could be better then Neosporin but I'm not expert on this.
Ok, Other then throwing the eggs out I see no reason NOT to administer and antibiotic at this point plus that stuff look really cheap. Hope either Tractor Supply or the Farm Bureau has it cause those are about the only two Ag places I have around me. I'll call both bright and early.
The withdrawal time is anywhere from 7-14 days depending on who you ask. It remains in the system for a short period of time. Most of what I have read indicates that 7 days is sufficient for clearance.
Pen G is pretty thick stuff. I doubt a 28 gauge needle would work.
Once you go through a round of antibiotics you are going to need to put your bird on a few weeks of probiotics to help build up the flora and fauna in the gut. Your bird will need to have yogurt and/or buttermilk for several weeks as an additive to its diet. Antibiotic usage carries its own risks, which is why it is not to be used lightly.
well it appears as though penicillin G is not readily accessible for me. The Farm Bureau was out of stock and tractor supply didn't carry it. I may have to look into orally administering
amoxicillin or something along those lines. In the meantime we're going to get the solution prepared and use castor oil and have that done by lunch time.
Procaine Penicillin G is always refrigerated at the farm stores, usually with vaccines and other meds. You may need to ask or call them, but my TSC and Southern States carries it. A 20 gauge needle will need to be used--some even advise drawing it up in an 18 gauge, but be sure to mix the contents of the vial well by gently shaking it.
Ok.....that did not go well at all. I had zero luck finding Pen G in a timely manner so we just gave her 125mg of amocicillin which we will repeat tonight. We gave it to her in some yogurt forcibly. We then gave her about 3 ml of aspirin/electrolyte water. After that we washed with full strength dakins solution which she DID not like and shook her head a lot. I think she may have gotten a little in her eyes but all appears well. We did not scrub the wound though. Just rinsed. It definitely looks worse not then it did last night but not much. Lastly we put the castor oil on.
She seems to be doing well and active but I can't help but have the feeling that shes going to nose dive in the couple days. She's still not drinking or eating and has an infection. I'll just stay the course and we'll see but its apparent that we are faaaaar from out of the woods.
