I had a female quail that was attacked by a hawk. I had the cage secured but it Managed to drop the cage and break the door and some how get in. I heard a huge commotion outside and my males were screaming. They have their normal calls which they do every so often and then they have their scared screams which are very loud crows and you can hear the distress. I rushed outside and saw a hawk in their cage thrashing around and I knew I lost some quails. In the couple minutes it was in there it had killed 3 quails and injured 4 others. 3 of the injured died and I expected my 4th to die but it didn’t. The unbelievable part is that it had the worst injuries out of all the quails. It was actually the worst injury I had seen. It’s whole crop was ripped off. The skin from its neck to between her legs were all gone. When it drank water or ate food you can see the food falling out. There was a hole where her crop used to be. It was really bad and it still is bad but how it looks now and how it was is like night and day. She still has no crop and when she eats food stills falls out and when she drinks water you can see the water all over her feathers. It is still healing and it’s incredible how far she has come. I have no idea how she is getting her food or her water. She is gaining weight again as well. The hole to her stomach is a lot smaller. She plays in her wood chips all day. I just couldn’t cull her and don’t think I can. She didn’t have a name but I think I might have to find a name for her.
