Hi...
was at work yesterday and got a call from DH who came home early and decided to let the chickens out....
He went out to the coop and thought something was odd. They were all inside except for 4, which were way on the other side of the run...
The one flew full force into the fence..... it was a hawk IN the run. The others bolted for the coop, and he closed them in, opened the doors and eventually the hawk flew out...... I did lose one bird.......
I am still unsure how it got into the run... it is covered with heavy netting. Must have been a gap from the weight of the leaves.
I have spent all morning "buttoning it up".
Thought I was all finished with it and filling waterers, etc, when I noticed my dark brahma must have taken a hit to the eye.
I have pics, but Im not sure how to get them on here.
I have washed it out (as best I can) with peroxide, and put terrimycin on it.
Anything else I can do?? I also have her separated from the others....

Thanks
Wynn

Wow, sorry to hear about that!!!

How bad is the eye? Do you think she can still see out of it?

You could try neosporin if the terrimycin doesn't seem to help.

Awww, Crud Wynn!

I've been having hawk troubles here too...I'm wondering if it's because of the Greenbush line starting up again. The noise and the vibrations make their prey go buhbye so they go after whatever is nearest.

Peroxide in her eye? I'm sure she's not thanking you...See if VCA Weymouth or the Vet's on 3A has any optical antibiotic you could use. If not, I have half a tube left from when Slifer had eye issues. I'm working tomorrow so if you need it, I'll bring it with me.

Chellester, and Spotted,

Thanks. I have seen them around and they have tried, but havent had success. The whole run is covered. I think it may have gotten in through a gap, Im not sure.

She actually was very calm during the peroxide wash, and let me do what I wanted. I was surprised. She wasn't too thrilled about the ointment though.
I actually got the pics up on my website. (click over by my name , and they are the last 3 pics on the chickens page) It looks really bad (I think) all swollen and such. She does seem to be eating and drinking though.
Spotted, I am working now too (I know...IM still in shock too) so I wont be able to swing in. Are you still at Petco? Maybe if it doesnt look any better in the morning Ill shoot you an email and we can figure something out....
Meantime, I thank all for suggestions....

Thanks

Wynn

For a while longer anyways...Manager has me only working 2 days a week right now, so I'm scouting things out...

Is her eye still in the socket...I couldn't tell in the pics. The antibacterial stuff would keep infections away...I wonder if one of the other birds smacked her in the face when they were trying to get out of Dodge...

Where are you working?

HI B,

Yes her eye is still in the socket...
very oozy and all around is very swollen.....
I can only assume she took a hit from the hawk, but I really don't know.....
I just wish I had been home to get a jump on it before this morning.......

I am working doing inventory (for now) at the yarn shop "Creative Stitch" in Hingham Square
I know the owner, and she has asked me about 4-5 times if I want a job.... when she mentioned inventory I said .."well, ya I can do that"
if it turns into a couple days a week after, thats great...
Right now it is fun. I get paid to count and play with yarn...

I'll keep you posted.
Thanks

Hi guys-
This is off-topic but my DH grew up right near Hingham in Duxbury. We'll be down there next weekend! Lovely part of MA you are in there.
Hope your hen is OK. I am scared of hawks now!

Stacey,

My husband is from Duxbury!!! Don't know how old you are but.... I met hubby at "The Ranch House" << dive bar! over 25 years ago! Maybe your husband knows the place! Maybe they know each other?!
My in-laws are still in town, as is my sis-in-law. We are in Scituate(2 towns north)
I in turn LOVE Maine!! Is that you daughter in the article?
