Yep, the hawks and eagles are just doing what comes naturally. They should not be shot for it. It sucks to lose an animal, but birds of prey do not deserve to die for doing what they are born to do. I keep all of my birds in a covered enclosures to keep the predators away. Sorry about your loss though.

I'm so sorry that you lost one of your Calls. It really stinks.

We have a small hawk living in one of the trees in our woods. I hear it constantly, but rarely see it. It's nest is in the front of my property. It's a smallish hawk. Most of my poultry is safe from this little one but my OEGB's and my Calls would definitely be in danger from him or her. The crows keep it at bay most of the time.

We have our flock very well guarded with our Great Pyrenees and the ones that can be spirited away are covered.

I truly don't know if its legal or not to shot the thing. I was too busy checking the rest of the ducks to consider the hawk. I looked up and DH went into the house, and came back out with a gun.

Our dog does a pretty good job of guarding the flock. Unfortunately, DH was loading the truck for a trip so we had the dog in the house so she wouldn't follow him when he left. The pen doesn't have a roof of any sort since it was only their day pen. I truly hadn't thought about daytime predators at all. I was worried about nighttime and everybody gets locked in the big coop at night. I had to search for the chickens after! Every single one was hiding under the pine trees being completely quiet.

DS was so sad when he found out. He kept saying 'my poor ducky' He's 9 and he loves to help with the chickens and ducks. He's always checking the bator during lockdown and helping to clean brooders/cages. His are the calls and the buttons, but he helps with everything. He asked if we can hatch another one cause now ducky is all alone.
