hawk in my yard

Glad she made it through it. I have never had a young bird survive a hawk attack. Even when I have been out at the pen to break it up, the attacks have been so sever that the chickens died of shock soon afterwards. You're very lucky to still have her around.

Federal protection?????? i'd shoot the hawk, who cares, if it hurts or kills my pets IN MY PROPERTY, its dead

I agree completely! I swear it is like they KNOW which ones are "near and dear" to us. I have 36 chickens and only ONE that really stood out with a unique personality - I just adored her! Out of all those chickens in the yard that stupid hawk had to get her! UGH!! All I have to say is my little farm sits so far back from our rarely traveled country road - you wouldn't even know we were here. And what happens out here STAYS out here. Let's just say...I have been working on my aim.

she can't see anything especially up with the mop top

I hear the Polish Chickens are easy prey because of this. Plus she's like a dog. She waits for us to sit in the yard to hang out with us . I guess without us in the yard she wanders around looking for us. She doesn't hang with the other birds so she doesn't get the protection of them watching out for her. This is the first hawk issue in 3 years. Usually it's Possum and cats. Snakes too

i'm just now realizing that the best way to deal with a hawk, if it returns on occasion, is to call a falconer/hawker in your area. to find one, google your state's hawking association. Ex: California Hawking Club. they'll give you a member in your area who'd probably love to come and trap it. or the state extension office.

i'd definitely call the state officials before shooting a raptor. you'd not want to use "hearby" to make a decision. i believe it is a federal issue and could cause some serious issues.
