For the second day in a row, there has been a young hawk flying around near my chicken coop and run.

He's brave and flies low to the ground and flies from tree branch to tree branch, until the crows run him off.

I like to let my chickens free range a couple of days a week but not this week....

Keeping the chickens locked up is the only safe way to deal with a hawk. My birds haven't gone outside yet due to the snow, but I have seen a couple of hawks sitting in the trees in the yard, seemingly waiting for the birds to come out.

Well federal law states of he kills your chickens which helps provide food or income you can legally kill it. Not saying it's the right thing but if it happens... My dad had one killing quail an asked a game warden in fl the warden told him per federal law...

this frequently depends on where you live and in many places requires the person to obtain a permit. Anyone contemplating it should give a ring to their local wildlife department just to be sure they are within the law.

The old adage of shoot, shovel and shut up comes to mind.

As for the crows; my ducks just lay eggs wherever. They are always scattered about the yard. The crows come in every morning at daylight to eat them. I don't bother the crows and have no hawks so it's a good trade. If I need to hatch ducks I need to get the eggs predawn as it's a daily ritual for the crows.

This is true where I live the law says the red tailed hawks, coyotes and Desert Turtle are protected no matter what and the mountain lion I need to call the Sheriff's department to get an ok to shoot unless a human's life is in danger .....

But a domestic animals and varmint's who are a pest I can dispatch ...

But this is why I let the crows eat at will ...

I live in a suburban neighborhood and the red tails and coopers are thick as thieves.

I drove down to see my parents yesterday and they live in the country and my dad is an hunter and constantly out in the woods. The subject of hawks came up and currently they are very few and far between where he lives. He said he can't remember the last time he saw one. Now he said if I want to take a coyote or two off his hands to just help myself. ;-)

I have a coopers hawk that just torments my poor hens. He just flies to the top of the run and stares in quite often. He is no doubt testing my netting defense on a regular basis.
