HAWK!!! Just happened!

countrygirl4513 - Maybe try butterfly bandages?? All grocery stores carry them. They've work really well on my kids (had to use them twice as we're 25 miles from the nearest emergency room) then just keep antibiotic gel on them.

Be careful with the superglue if you use it. I heard that the fumes can be very toxic, so be sure that the area is very well ventilated. Also, be careful to not to glue your own skin together... i've heard this can happen too.

Kruptie what type of hawks we have a pair of redtails but my buddies the ravens chased them away I love my ravens LOL.

Good luck i think butterfly bandages should work

soooo sorry hawks are all over here but i live with alot of trees so im guessing they dont see them but occasionaly they fly real low so i lock up all my chooks

what type of hawks

i'm not sure. i think they're red shouldered, but there may be some red tails in the area too. here is a snap shot i took out my bed room window a few years ago of a youngster.

they like to roost by the coop every once and a while, which drives the chickens crazy (they usually make a raucous and run into the coop).

most of our corvus family birds (crow, raven, etc.) were wiped out by West Nile several years ago. perhaps has given the hawks a freer range. i am happy to say (and i never thought i ever say this) that our crows are finally coming back.

we also are regularly visited by owls, foxes, and raccoons. welcome to the suburbs! stags come to sleep in my back yard and does bring their young to feed on our gardens. now, my bother, who's in rural PA, seen a mountain lion and Peachicks up in northern MD had a mink attack. what's out in the real wilderness? dinosaurs?

Thanks for the help. She is resting in the coop with the others and everyone is asleep. If she makes it through tonight I will just have play it by ear. I've seen them through tough times before and they amaze me at how well they heal. Thanks again!!

Oh my gosh dutchman. I'm so sorry! I didn't realize that you had posted this till now. Last night I was in a tither trying to help Sweetie. These dang critters are just so brazen anymore.Luckily, my dogs killed a juvenille coon last week trying to cause a ruckus. I have decided that it wasn't a hawk instead I believe it was a huge owl. Since the attack happened at dusk and from what I've been told hawks are daytime preds. Isn't that true? Or am I mistaken?

We had a Red-Tailed hawk take a 3 month old rooster at about dusk. My Uncle had a hawk swoop down about 10 feet in front of him while walking out to get the paper at around 8:00 am and take off with his 5 year old Miniature Pincher. He was devasted, that dog was his best friend and he could only watch as the hawk carried it away.

I've posted before about the hawks in our area and got mixed responses. I wanted revenge, but I understand that the hawk is just trying to survive. We have taken measures to secure our chickens now, but I still cuss at the hawks when they come in our yard - they don't listen to me either...

I'm praying for your hen,
Dana

i'm pretty sure that hawks are daytime preds and owls are nighttime preds. but, i'm not sure about dusk and dawn though. maybe depends on light level and how hungry the pred is.

i think that i'd have a lot harder time trying to identify the bird during dusk or dawn too.

i heard that rabbits were most active during dusk and dawn to avoid preds during shift from one type of predator to the other. but, i guess that doesn't mean that there aren't any around during those times.

How's Sweetie doing this morning?

I think you are right about the owl. They are more apt to attack at dusk or dark.I don't see alot hawks that late and we have alot in this area.I think here they mostly feed on field mice and small birds out of peoples bird feeders around here. They are kinda nervie.I think they know they are a protected bird. There's not much you can do about them except maybe get a good ole'OEG rooster or maybe some Guinea fowl either one will stand up to them.My chickens always ran for cover at the first sign.
But I think you are right about the owl, they will even fly right in the coop pophole at night if they can.
I think you did the right thing, that bluecote is awesome stuff,if it wasn't blue humans would use it. good luck. will
