Sitting here looking on the forum, I heard roosters, geese, turkies going off. I look out the screen door in time for a huge red hawk swoop down behind my barn. I took off screaming and clapping my hands as loud as I could. I didn't see where it went though. I was to busy trying to get to all of my girls and boys. It is so quite out there now. You could here a pin drop. Which I am thinking it must be somewhere close by. I checked everyone looks to be fine just really scared. They did a real good job of hiding. I am going out to do a head count make sure there are no loses. Wish I had my grandmothers sling shot. I am going to start carrying a pot and wooden spoon with me.

Same thing happened at my place today. The hawks must be hungry! This hawk swooped down and tried to grab a tiny turkey poult, but the poult flattened itself into the ground, as momma ran screaming after the hawk and chased it for 20 feet into the field. Luckily the head count is the same -- nobody was taken.

Hawks are feeding up before the autumn flight south. You may be seeing a northern hawk which has moved slightly south, looking for a meal. Once a migrating hawk finds a reliable food source it hunts for many days. Um, you'll need more than a slingshot or a wooden spoon...and since most hawks are protected, you may need to cover your run...

You are lucky on several counts! Hawks are regulars around here. Our run is covered but there are still hawks that sit in the pine trees just watching...everyday. My chickens have never been attacked (covered run) but they still know the hawk is bad news. Every time one lands in the tree, they start running for the house screeching "hawwwwk" "hawwwk". Now how did they learn that?
