I have always used 6ft fence sometimes buried slightly so maybe 5ft 6inches, we never had any of the game breeds which are good fliers, some of our easter eggers could fly out and the white leghorns, clipped wings stopped the problem. None of our older brown egg layers ever flew out, buff orps, barred rocks, Rhode island reds, australorps, and cross breeds.
