Hawk Problems...Share your stories...What works for you?

You seldom are managing against a single type of predator. I like to have so foraging area is variable with respect to types of refugia it provides. Heavy low cover provides some protection from hawks. Taller trees with branches 10 to 15 feet up and heavy enough to support even adult rooster can be be used when foxes and coyotes visit. All cover types require vigilance of flock, proper mentality for escape, and the physical ability to run or fly to cover as needed. Chickens prior experience is important for vigilance and mentality while breed is extremely important for the physically abilities once proper escape decision is made. Some breeds will be lost preferentially to predators. If I were free-ranged a flock of 100 birds made up of 50 game hens and 50 dominiques under extremely heavy wild predator pressure, all the dominiques would be taken before first 10 games.

game birds are more flighty one of mine flew across my yard one time when a cat was chasing her and more heavy type bird will be taken first they would be slower and fancy type birds like polish and silkies can't see that well they would be taken fast to their not the best free rangers ... so ya like centrarchid is right the breed does matter .. a lot of predators will go for the slower the weak or the sick an easier prey they would mostly likely go for
