and theres NOTHING illegal about giving advice,,, just cause someone says SSS doesnt mean they broke a law,, the ONLY time you can have problems with the law, is if you came on here and said I DID IT,, thats it. if bad advice was against the law,, noone would be out of jail

Actually, I believe that suggesting an illegal act could fall under aiding and abetting. That it would stand up in court in a case like this is perhaps far-fetched, but is certainly possible and not worth the risk.

According to http://definitions.uslegal.com/a/aiding-and-abetting/ here is the legal definition:
"Aiding and abetting generally means to somehow assist in the commission of a crime, or to be an accomplice. It involves a plan to commit a crime or to commit acts, the probable consequences of which are criminal.

An accomplice may assist or encourage the main offender with the same intent to have the crime committed, but does not necessarily have to be present when the crime is actually committed. However, without sharing the criminal intent, one who is merely present when a crime occurs and stands by silently is not an accomplice, regardless of the harm that could've been prevented if he/she had acted."

And yes, there are certainly game wardens or spouses of such on this site. There are surely law enforcement officers here as well. I am sure they are on here for the same reason we are, but expecting them to look the other way when discussing felonious acts is presumptious. In my opinion, as jenns peeps said, it is not a good idea to suggest illegal acts, especially on a public forum.

To OP, I suggest covering their run for a while. Hawks are migrating right now and yours will likely move on. It's a bummer for the chickens to have to be on lockdown, but it's probably your best option to keep them safe. Good luck.

i also thought that in the pred. part of the forum,, a mod. once said,, NOT to make such a deal bout legalities,, this is the part of the forum to discuss HOW to deal with the problem,, not the law.
but then again,, i could be wrong,, i was once when i was 6

Honestly, I feel like it's totally up to each person on how to deal with the legalities of their own actions when dealing with predators, they are the one taking the risk, not I. But, I think it's also important to point out when someone suggests something illegal to someone that may not know the suggestion is an illegal act. It just wouldn't be responsible to not mention it. Knowledge is good. The law can be a pertinant part of discussing how to deal with predator, and I doubt it would have had to have been brought up if there weren't some suggesting to the OP (who may not be aware of the law in the US pertaining to raptors) that they commit a felony. That's just my 2 cents, take it or leave it.

OK.....I didn't read the past posts, but I have had hawk fatalities. All I can say is "BOTTLE ROCKETS!!!!!!"
It totally worked for me. We shot them at the hawks for about 2 weeks and then they completely disapered. Now we didn't hit them....just aimed in their direction to help them decide it wasn't worth it.

Let me add that these hawks have also taken small dogs in our area and we have 2 dogs under 4 lbs, so we really wanted to encourage them to move on after they ate a chicken. The good news is that now the hawks are gone, we have owls and they leave the chickens and dogs alone and eat the rats and squirels.

We love owls!!!

posts 10,17, and 19 all said it was illegal,,,im poor,, so thats jus my 1 cents worth hehe

in fact,, even yelling at the hawk is illegal, putting things up to discourage it is illegal, and by the definition of the law, putting up netting in its hunting grounds could be considered illegal.

paintball guns are a good warning device,, just shoot them in the air,, if a bird happens to fly into the paintball,, it was his fault

I have a raven that works the 80 for me. He let's me know when ever there is a predator around. He even alerts me to the cat's whereabouts when he is out.

My wife thinks I'm crazy when I tell I communicate with the Raven....but he flies by every morning....close(wings wooshing) and says "hellooooooow"

It used to be just a caw caw...but now he changes tone and uses syllables.

The problem with the SSS method is then you don't have the hawks to take care or the rodents. I had a huge ground hog population that was decimating my garden. I killed 15 myself. When the hawks found one I had left as a warning to the rest (which didn't work BTW) he started buzzing my garden and saved me a lot of varmint ammo. try playing a radio loud when your chickens are outside the run or coop. Just don't play military type music. I think they are maybe inspired by that

OK So I'm a newb.. I had to look "SSS" up.

Hawks are my biggest fear. We have tons of them. We also have Bald Eagles. I'm still not sure how I'll manage to deal with either if they decide my birds are just too tasty to leave alone.
