Hawk tried to get my Girls.

LoL! I noticed those missing feathers. He must be a good roo to still be alive.

Hawk helper... Thats funny. If I do get a chance at him I won't be missing. I'm pretty good at sporting clays.

The girls wouldn't come back out. I had 4 empty runs for the longest time. I finally went out and threw some scratch out for them and they quickly forgot all about that nasty hawk.

I haven't seen him come back so I'm hoping all is well. I'll have to keep a close eye out for him though.

Those gals must have raised one heck of a racket when they were all upset!
I'm wondering if this fall all the predators are doing some early grocery shopping ("Oh boy, there's a special on chicken today!") and stocking up for winter. I've seen several other BYC'ers mentioning their first ever hawk attack... and don't get me started on our first coyote attack this fall

Sure puts a damper on our free ranging.

How nice to know our "shooting gallery" offers coyote as well!

We had fox problems with the chicken tractor this spring. He never got into it and after my DH stung his bum with a .22 short he doesn't come to our house anymore.

I saw him out in the field behind us a week or so ago, but he's got all the easy hunting with Golden Ponds Park at the end of my street. All the duck and geese he can get a hold of. Easier than Fork Knox protected poultry.

That's great! I'll bet he did the Fox Trot right off your property!

We had one chicken who survived two direct hits from a fox in our yard - one tough gal! One of the times, my DH was sitting on our front porch reading and our chicken ran right past him, followed closely by a fox - bold as brass!

They ran all around the house. Whoever said there's nothing going on out in the country?!

all the young hawks are on their own now and migration is starting. You'll see young hawks that are just learning to hunt and the guys passing through looking for a free meal.

There used to be a sticky on this forum about the laws for killing hawks and owls; because the issue comes up all the time. If you do SSS bird of prey, don't post. It's illegal in every state, and it bothers a lot of people.

So how can you SSS when you just posted it so that 500,000,000 of your closest friends can see what you are up to? Hope ya got 15,000 dollars in hand and a little free time to spare too. These boards are watched and it is not hard to track your IP.

Maybe so, but at this point, nothings been killed so what have they got to prosecute?

I'm not for killing anything, but I'm also not for having anything killed, especially my girls.

rotten hawk. I love big birds but I have a problem too. I am in eastern NC and we are kind of remote. My husband witnessed one swoop down and grab one of my girls. He ran feverishly after the hawk which wasn't but about 100 yards away. (brave birds aren't they?) Thank God the hawk dropped my hen basically unharmed. The next day...out came the shot gun when we wanted to let the girls free range. I don't know what else to do to let them have more freedom. I don't want to deal with a big fine for killing a bird of prey.
