Hawks or predatory birds

I live near San Jose (I don't want to specify what city I live in), and one of my chicks was eaten when I was letting him/her roam around... what species of birds will eat chicks around my area?

Don’t let chicks out there is no reason to. Anything can harm them. They shouldn’t be away from the light bulb either.
