Hawks uhhh and my dog

We had two dogs 10 and 12 years old when we first got chickens. Combined they killed 7. We decided to train them to leave the chickens alone.

Started them on a leash around the chickens and every time they lunged or even showed interest we would give them a quick pull on the lead with a sharp "Ah Ah!" or "leave it!". After a couple month they would have short closely supervised off leash times with the chickens. Again if they even went near the birds they got an "Ah Ah!" and if needed a quick tap to the neck to get there attention. Even got them to lay still while holding a chicken. (make sure it is a calm bird to hold)Had to teach the dogs to submit to the chickens.

It took about 6 months before I trusted the dogs alone with them but it worked. Both dogs gave way when the hens walked by. The chickens even chased the dogs away form their treats. Having your dog out with the girls has its benefits. I saw one of my dogs chase off a hawk that landed in the yard.

If you decided to train your dog do it in the warm weather. You will be outside a lot.
Good Luck!
