how do you folks scare away hawks.
The sit on my chicken coup, quail cage and pheasant run. The geese honking and hissing has no affect. Do you put out spinners or scare crow type things.?

That would br great BUT I have Springer spaniels lol
It’s rough enough keeping by bird dogs away from my birds lol

I have done just about everything and bought just about everything. I feel as if once they found out I have chickens they come around much more frequently and have attempted to take one for food multiple times. With that being said.... I have put out disco balls and hang them from 6 feet plant hooks. I haven't had as much hawk visits but it isn't the season for them here. They say when the light hits the the reflection can disorient them . They become more active and more profuse in the spring.

What about the bird spikes? Can you put them where they are landing and hanging out?

We have Red Tail Hawks out here on the coast of CA. They love chicken. Our girls are free range during the day and cooped at night. We have lots and lots of trees but we are on 4 acres surrounded by 20 acres of open pasture land so the Hawks hunt the area for squirrels and Dove. Sadly even with plenty of cover, the Hawks have killed a couple of our chickens. Hawks here, like most states, are protected either directly or by being a non-game bird so shooting them isn't something I want or can do. I've noticed that many other types of birds (everything from 'tweety' birds, crows, jays etc) attack or harass the Hawks when they try do a fly by into the smaller birds territory. I'm thinking of encouraging these smaller bird varieties to stick around to help protect the chickens by putting up a few small bird houses and feeders in strategic locations. It seems like a logical move.

This works for me...have a dozen or so a year bounce off the run roof.
