OK we counted 7 flying overhead at once the other day. This was before the chicks came home. We do not plan to free range. We are building a covered run. My stupid question of the day - If the run is covered with a bird netting and eventually chicken wire, do I have to worry about the hawks? Thanks!

Ours is covered with deer netting and it works just fine. We have numerous red tailed hawks here on our farm, and I think they can see it from where they are flying around. Let me just say, if they flew into it, it would be a mess. The stuff is like spider web.

Most of the time it works as long as it is securely attached...but one time a hawk tore through the netting on my duck pen to feast on ducklings and couldnt figure out how to get back out. We had to get her out. They have large sharp beaks.

I have mine covered with chicken wire just in case the coons want to try to get in from up top.

I put up chicken wire on mine to keep out hawks. They should be able to see the netting. They've got amazing vision. That should keep them out. Hawks and coyotes are the main predators around here, what I'm most worried about.
