Hawks

Thank you Lydia for the kind words. No they didn't get all three in one day, but did get them before I realized what had happened. I am brand new to all of this, never had any farm animals because I grew up in the city of Detroit. Yesterday and today, I have only let them out for an hour before they roost and I am staying down there armed with a BB Gun and a water hose. I'm ready for
that Hawk now. Grrrrrr LOL I like to feed them their treat of meal worms every afternoon, unfortunately I have not timed it perfect yet cause some already were roosting and would not come out.
Thanks again, this site is WONDERFUL!
Probably a good idea SR especially since he has been able to take some which means he/she will probably come back.

I saw a small hawk this am. reddish colored. I have bantam chicken 3/4 grown. I feed wild birds so am always on the look out for Hawks. The bird book says this hawk eats small mammals. I like to let the chickens out to run in my fenced garden but I worry about the hawks and the cats.

So yesterday I had the girls out of their run in my fenced in back yard...... Suddenly I see four of my girls dash back to the run like chickens with their heads cut off. I see them all glaring up into the sky so I know something up. So I get up and look to a hawk up on the telephone pole staring down at my fifth chicken which was all alone (shes the smallest). I ended up throwing a rock up at the hawk which made him fly away. I then ended up putting my girls away for a little. The hawk wasn't very big, he maybe only stood a foot tall. Should I be worried about him attacking my girls? And why didn't my smallest girl run with the rest of the flock?

It sounds like your hawk was a sharp shined hawk also known as a blue darter. At any rate Sharp Shined Hawks are bad news in the chicken yard.
