Yes, we have used sand from day one and have had no problems at all. I love it. I have Fibromyalgia and it is much easier for me to simply sift out the poop with a cheap strainer from the dollar store than to change out shavings all the time.

Give it a try and see what you think.

I've used hay, shredded paper and shavings. I don't favor one over the other as I think they all have their pros and cons...
Haven't tried sand, but that's a thought....

My girls are in an 8x10 shed. Can I use sand in the whole thing? Can I get any kind of sand? What do you use in the nest boxes? Can I use sand in the run also?
It's 8x25 about

My Coop is about 8 x 10 and I just finished putting the sand it, it took about 11 bags of "construction sand" from Lowes. It is about 2" deep all over the floor.
I don't know about the sand in the run but I am sure it would work, although I have read other posts that mention pea gravel.
My "chicken kids" have a run that is about 18 x 30 and there is still grass in it for now... they will be free range also so it may last a little longer before I have to decide what to do about the run.

yeah I heard the same thing about paper shreddings too--not good causes spraddle legs. Sand gets heavy too in the coop, but still sounds good.
