So yesterday I made the decision to take all the hens away from the roosters. We bought 12 barred rocks in April and only got what we believe to be 4 hens out of the dozen. My SO hasn't had much experience as far as processing so he has been taking imho far too long to do so. Im squeamish so I can't do it so it's a matter of waiting for him. Anyways they have started mounting now so I decided to move the hens out of that coop into the all hen coop to prevent them from over breeding and fighting. I went to grab one hen and...what I thought was our most timid rooster...bit me.

It looks way better than it did yesterday. I got ice on it pretty quickly. He drew blood and it was pretty badly bruised. We have never raised roos before so this is a first for me. Anyways...he won the lottery and can expect transportation to "the island" this week.

lol one of my chickens bit me and I still have a scar from him, still love him tho (he was a favourite and would try to sit on my lap)
I've been trying not to get attached to them because we have way too many. We can only keep one and he was in the running for that position. He just lost the popular vote

I’m glad you’re being realistic about it. Are there any Amish or Mennonite in your area that could process then for you?
The nearest Amish are in Shipshewana, IN which is pretty far. It's not impossible...just far. I only have room in my fridge for 2 birds at a time to sit in rigor otherwise I might cart them up there. My SO has a 3 day weekend though so we can get at least 4 of the birds taken care of. We already took care of one a couple of weeks ago and we plan to keep one so we only have to dispatch 6 more birds
