he cant see!!! :(

i have a two day old chick hatched via mom who isn't quite right. he was pretty much dead when i found him the morning he hatched. he was cold and twitching instead of moving around so i took him from mom and put him in a box with a lamp, trying to make him as 'comfortable' as i could. i thought sure enough he was a goner but is doing MUCH better! he hobbles and doesn't run around like the other babies and randomly puts his head down and 'goes to sleep' for a few seconds. i still have my doubts on his survival but for now i am referring to him as Trooper

well today i notcied his right eye is crusted over? they were both open and functioning yesterday but today you can barely see his eye (you can sort of see it under the crust or what ever it is).. i took a q-tip and some water to try and moisturize it and clear it away but it didnt seem to do anything. any ideas on what is it or how i can help him see again? like i said, i doubt he is going to survive more than a few days but so far he has shocked me so i have my fingers crossed for the little guy!

any advice is greatly appreciated!!

sorry to hear you have a little guy that isn't doing well. I wish I had some advice for you, but I am new to chicks. From all that I have read on here, keep the little one warm, provide water with some baby vitamins in it (and maybe a little sugar), and hope for the best.

I have no idea about the eye, but swabbing with a moistened qtip seems reasonable. I hope someone else with more experience can chime in here for you.

My gimpy chick was having a hard time walking and it turns out gis left eye was stuck shut so I used warm, wet towel to loosen the crust and he is much better now. He is acting normal.

I am unsure about chicks, but when I have had tiny kittens with crusty eyes I was instructed to use boric acid diluted with sterile warm water. You wash the eye area with a qtip or cotton ball dipped in the solution about 4 times a day. You can by it at a regular pharmacy. It is located with other eye products.

Cleanse the eye area and apply some kind of oinment. I like the terramycin oinment but ive heard neosporin (without pain reliever)works just as well.

Use a qtip with just plain warm water and clean it off so he can open and close his eye. Then use another q tip to rub some antibiitic ointment on it. I used bacitracin ointment because i had it on hand, but you can also use neosporin or terrmycin or another antibiotic. Bacitracin works awesome for me though as it is used mainly for skin and eye problems

I would do the same. I would not have thought of using neosporin on the eye but it's worth a shot. The chick will do fine with one eye if it ends up blind.

I have a house chicken that is blind in one eye. A birth defect but she does fine. She actually appears to have the sinus also caved in on the same side as the blind eye. She's a year old now and is raising some foster chicks she sat on and hatched.

I have a chick a little like yours. I got her eye to open and put some of my kids eye antibiotic in it and this morning she looks great! I also gave her some sugar water +electrolites via small syrange. She is a lot smaller than her syblings but she is looking pretty good. I don't know if she will make it though, because she is so much smaller
