So over the weekend, I went to let my flock out and behind the coop is this HUGE BEAST!

    I mean he's a big one.

Well maybe not that big, you see in my flock, I have all Bantams, my Roosters and hens are very small Except my Phoenix. But this Rooster shows up at my house over the weekend and HE'S HUGE. Three Times larger then any of my Bantams and Twice as large as my Phoenix.

I didn't think much of it, just thought he was pass by UNTIL, Sunday, it started to snow really bad and this poor beast was Roosting up on top of my COOP.

I COULDN"T JUST LEAVE HIM THERE.

So I got a chair and grabbed him down. He's very friendly but I have NO idea what he is, except that he's a BEAST!! LOL..

I have NO clue what he is but he is enjoying his time at my house....He doesn't appear to have any spurs either? if he does they are very small...unlike my bantams who has spurs about 2 inches long..

    ANY THOUGHTS???

He's a beauty! I'm no expert on breeds by any stretch of the imagination, but I think he's either a Black Australorp or Black Orpington. You should probably isolate him in his own area for a time...just in case of illness/disease....what a find! [IMG]

Oh Yes, I'm aware of that, he's in a dog crate as you can see his just as tall as the crate, I believe the guy Five houses down the road has australorp.

Some things were mentioned that his previous owner didn't want him any more knew I had chickens and dropped him off. THAT IS SOOOO CRUEL IF THAT'S THE CASE. I mean really you couldn't come to the door and ask me if I would take him in????

Cool thing he's not a fighter, could careless about my other roosters. LOL

If he is REALLY big he could be a Jersey Giant. They are usually black. He could just be big compared with your flock, LOL! Really nice of you to take him in like that!

WOW so far I have looked up each one of these types of roosters that you guys have given me and they all LOOK the same, is there any type or feature that I could look at with my New boy to kind of pin point it down?

YES He's a big one/ LOL perhaps I can measure him tonight and weigh him maybe that would help??

bottoms of feet are supposed to be the go-to for australorp vs. jersey giant...I cant ever remember which is which though. He's pretty!...if he's a black orp, its possible he's actually a BLUE orp...I suggest you go purchase blue orp girlies for him and see what they produce...for purely scientific reasons, of course ;)...chicken math

X2 I think the jersey giants are the ones with yellow feet. Aussies either have black or whitish feet.

Australorps and Orpingtons both have whitish/pinkish bottoms of feet. Jersey Giants have yellowish bottoms of feet. It can be hard to tell an Australorp apart from an Orpington, though a quality Orpington should be deeper in body and fluffier.

X2 on that. The bottoms of the feet will tell you whether he's a Black Australorp/Orpington or a Black Jersey Giant.
