I just went to the coop as I do everymorning......everything appeared normal- while cleaning droppings I noticed a hen(?) that was not moving....Thye normally all move when I come in, into the feeder & waterer.
this one was sitting under the edge of the shelf........
Give us the following information. The more you tell us, the better we will be able to help you.
1) What type of bird , age and weight. Black Sex Link Hen, 6 months, 4-6lbs
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Neck in S position wont move, Beak Slightly opened.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation? UnKnown
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Layer50/gamebird50 water Crop Normal
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal (last night)
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Isolation, heat, ACV in Water Dribbled along open beak. moved inside for observation (cat kennel)
8) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Treat myself 67miles to nearest vet (don't know if would see chickens) My Vet out of State.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use ...
Coop Insulated Coop- large Run, Coop Temp +60 (outside Blowing Snow +8) Hay 12 " deep (replaced yesterday)
Last check 10pm last night all was well. Straw & pine Shavings in nestboxes.
Edited to include treatment:
It appears the neck is locked in this position. I feel nothing wrong with it other than stiffness.
I have started molasses water and also electrolytes & Probios via pipette.
she seems to be holding her own at the moment, however still unable to move her neck, she moves her head a bit, feels like a tight tendon on the right hand side of the neck. Massaged gentlely with fingertips. her Neck feels like she has a pinched nerve (seized in funny S shape head looking to her right).
Keeping her in the kennel in my bathroom for tonight. Strict washing of hands with antibaterial soap after every handling.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Continuing the ACV water as much as I can.
don't know what else to do for her .....still giving gentle massage as well. She goes to sleep during the massage and makes me feel guity when I set her back in her kennel for waking her up.
Still hoping someone can give advise or suggestions.
ETA: Penny is eating by herself & has filled her crop~
