Head Lice in our Area! Tips on staying safe?

I have done a lot of research on lice to help the parents and kids at the school where I am the nurse. I check heads...fun huh? lol Lice like CLEAN hair. No chemicals, perfect for a kiddos hair! You can put in a leave in conditioner, mousse, hairspray or any chemical (a detangler) and the lice will look somewhere else. Not to say that they will never get them but it makes them less tasty for the bugs. Also, sharing hats, hair 'pretties' scarves, even carrying someone elses backpack can cause the bugs to crawl from one place to another. Never let your kids try on hats at the store! ask the nurse to also check your hair when you pick the kids up. you have to wash coats, backpacks, hats, scarves, combs, brushes, hair accessories, bedding. Do not reuse a towel until the lice are gone. if you have carpet, vacuum!!! once you are done vacuuming, get rid of the bag in the cleaner or dump out the canister and take the trash out. I personally do not recommend using the chemical insecticide on a childs head. The old remedies are fine for getting them out of the hair but you must be on top of the other cleaning. put olive oil on hair and a shower cap over and leave on for several hours (overnight is great). use vinegar to help cut the oil then wash. any fine tooth comb works. I know several people that use flea combs because they had them on hand. This is not a task that I enjoy but it is something I must do as part of my job. Please do not take it out on the nurse....they only do the checks because of district policy.

Had to share that the very best product for head lice EVER is Greenbug for People. The nurse at our school told me about it. It is 100% effective in killing head lice - plus the nits - in one treatment. So you don't have to comb the nits out! It is completely safe too - food grade ingredients and the powerful active ingredient is cedar - just like cedar chests and closets where you never see a bug. Makes sense. I ordered some online to have on hand as we get lice every year at our school and I am not at all happy about the other options as they are toxic. Instead of the merry-go-round expensive treatments that obviously didn't work in the past, Greenbug worked in one simple treatment and poof! No more head lice. Everyone should know about this. Their website is www.greenbugnatural.com or www.greenbugallnatural.com - can't remember. Or just google Greenbug for People and you'll find it.

Tea tree oil in your daily shampoo, neem oil, which has been in use in Asia forever, has the same effect and doesn't smell strongly like tea tree, and many, many older people recommend crisco.
