Head room for RIR Roost

I have 2 RIR and would like to put in a new roost but not sure how high I can make it. What amout of head room do they need and what size stick? And how long should stick be? Thanks sooooo much!! Oh and do I have to close them up in coop at night? Or can I leave door open to run?

Thanks I do lock it tight I just wasn't sure if it was required? Is it just because of predators? Or because they need it for another reason?

Agreed on the door, I don't sleep until the girls are bolted in for the night. Also curious about the roost height and headroom I have a couple of RIR's that have been eyeballing the space above the windows. Is it better to try and keep everyone at the same level to prevent a pecking order issue?

I did a search and they say 10" across and 2ft head room....ugh that doesn't leave me much space....First coop so I am already planning on enlarging it. Thanks guys!!
