I’m posting this video in the hopes that someone with experience can spot what’s going on. This is a 6 month old barred rock pullet who isn’t laying yet. She acts completely normal during the day except for two days ago when I found her with some yellowish poop on her butt and she was standing still panting (it wasn’t very hot and the other hens weren’t panting and have been fine). I put her in a crate and examined her poops and they were normal and she acted normal so I put her back with the others. I have cams in my coops and I started observing her at night. Nighttime is when she acts very sick. She seemingly does not sleep for more than a few seconds at a time. She tries but is constantly awoken by head twitching then opens her beak to breathe/pant and spread her wings. I’m going to check her ears in the morning. I feel awful for this hen and I want to assist. If you watch the video for a while you’ll see all the behaviors.

Have you check per her body for lice and mites? I would do that along with checking her ears for gunk or discharge. She could be having some seizures or adjusting her crop. Post any pictures of her poops. She should be laying by now, so I would try to rule out a reproductive infection. Is her crop emptying overnight? Is her lower belly enlarged, tight, hard, or spongy?

Thank you for your response. We haven’t been able to see clearly in her ears. Opening the flap they are barely visible bc of all the feathers growing right up to them. I see now evidence of mites or lice and this is exactly why I’m puzzled.
I really thought the woman who sold them to me had their age wrong. She sold me two barred rock nearly identical and one is just fine. Her crop is perfect. Her poop and butt look perfect. But I’m still about to crate her so I can watch her better. And of course I’m worried about the other hens catching something. She’s so perky and running around eating well. I am truly stumped.

Her ears are totally clear. No live or. It’s anywhere on her body. No scratching or twitching all day today.
I guess my question is- what causes chickens to twitch and struggle to breathe ONLY at night??
