Healing Chicken Wounds!

Also, an obvious issue in ordering antibiotics online is that you have to wait many days for delivery (esp. when there is a blizzard going on!)... and chicken will be dead by then if she had an internal infection! So we couldn't go that route. Maybe we'll get some to have on hand for the next attack.

So... we ended up taking the muchacha to the vet as she was not really moving or eating. Definitely appears to have gotten some kind of internal infection (vet fears possible septic, but we got her on meds now), not sure how. It was a siginificant wound though, so it would have been easy for some bug to get in. Then the reason she couldn't walk was that her leg had started to scab to her chest as she was just sitting all day. Vet had to sort of pull it apart so she can actually heal, and said we need to move her leg around everyday so it comes apart fully and can heal properly. One also has to work extra hard to keep them clean in this state, because just sitting and being ill they basically diarrhea all over themselves and it can become pretty messy. Be warned! haha We learned a lot just by talking to the vets. They did some things there to help her and gave us the meds. At some point one has to force feed a real sick chick or it's one less chicken real soon - seems they can fade rapidly once they start to fade. I think we certainly can just try things out and most chickens will probably be ok, plus I'm sure some folks are not gona spend a bunch of dollars on chicken healthcare! But it's good to learn. The vets advised (expectedly) against just ordering anit-biotics and even didn't verify stuff like vetericyn. But after 1 full day of meds and more eating she definitely appears better, and significantly more animated.

It's been good to learn some chicken maintenance!
Will update after another couple of days on the mend...
Maybe you could put her in a chicken sling over a tote. Many do that here. Might keep her a little cleaner poop wise, Hopefully someone will come along to show you the set-up or maybe you already know about it. Good luck
