Healthy chicks?

I'm new to raising chickens but it's something I have always wanted to do. We bought ours from a hatchery. I've seen some chicks on CL that I'd love to have! Everywhere I price them online is more than we can pay. The add on CL has been there repeatedly for months. My question is how do I make sure the chicks from the ad are healthy? We did have one hatchery chick die. I worry about bringing in illnesses from other sources.

Tractor Supply and several other stores will be start their annual spring chick sale in a couple days. You can ask what breeds they will have and they should be able to tell you. They should also be able to answer most of your questions.
