I sent one of my girls off for a necropsy, due to the sneezing/breathing type illness going on in my coop.

They just called to tell me that it is a respitory infection. They were not able to tell me what exact type, i wasnt paying $50 to sent the tissues of to a second lab. They said they weren't able to tell due to the antiboitucs they had been on before she died. I should get the full written report in a few days.

So now i am left with some questions..

1. Are all respitory infections contagious?

2. Will the rest always be carriers?

3. How do i proceed to clean if i decide to cull and start over?

4. And lastly, the toughest. I have 4 6 weekers in my playroom. They spent less than 24 hrs in the big coop before i realized mama wasnt going to take them. Would they have been affected in that short time? Or will it be safe to keep them?

If this was me I would cull the sick ones, I know that chickens don't get colds and that most that get sick and recover are carriers and can infect new birds. I have heard that you can use oxine (sp) to clean. Hopefully the people who have went through something like this will post. If some don't get sick then they may be immune to what ever this was. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear about the infection problem.

If the chicks didn't show any symptoms it sounds like they should be ok.

I guess it is safest to assume that any chickens who showed symptoms would be carriers. I supposed you are left wondering how the infection got into your flock in the first place.

That I think i know. I got some chickens awhile back that and she was the first to get sick. I honestly do not believe they knew she was sick. I even quarentined for 4 weeks and she didnt show signs until after that.

I will not be getting anything but hatchery chicks from here out....(but i would reeeaaallly like to keep my babies downstairs...)

If I remember what I read right as long as they don't show any symptoms after one gets sick they should be fine. I was reading a post where people only culled the sick ones and the ones who never showed signs of illness where immune to what ever this was. I think your babies should be fine. I would just watch the rest for illness. Can you keep the younger ones away from the older flock for a while more just to make sure this illness is gone. If you have any others showing signs of being sick I would cull right away. This is just what I would do. I hope things work out for you good luck.

I think it might be worth the $50 to have some peace of mind and know for sure how to go forward from this point. We are only making guesses as to what the problem could be. A few cultures may mean the difference between treating, or culling the whole lot and starting over.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I have to agree. You are guessing in the dark on what to do without the full, complete diagnosis. You already knew they had a respiratory illness, and now you are back where you started from with NO useful information. If you knew what you had, it would help to decide what to do with the rest of the birds. For instance, if the young ones were exposed to ILT or coryza, I would probably cull. If it was something less contagious, I might would attempt to keep them. It would also help you with the disinfection process on your coop. Some diseases require that it stand empty for a very long time, others the disease organism dies easily once off the chicken. I am not trying to be mean, but you kinda blew your chances to find out what is going on with your birds. I hope it all works out for you.

Agreed. I guess I look at it as how much money you'd be culling out vs. the 50.00 to know what you are dealing with.

Good luck, I hope you get it cleared out soon!
