Hello fellow chicken lovers, I've got some sad news. I went out to feed yesterday mornin, opened the pen door & there layed my Silver Spangled Hamburg roo dead. He was just fine the day before, nice red comb, very active, just a good lookin Hamburg. I have 5 more chickens in the same pen & all look & act great. I can't figure out why he just died. No signs of illness no nothing. I talked to a buddy of mine & he thinks the roo may have had a heart attack. He says where Hamburgs are so skittish & scared that their hearts have to be racin all the time, I don't know. Anybody ever have a nice healthy lookin chicken just fall over dead? I am baffled as to what happened, never seen such in my life. He wasn't layin near their roost or anything so he didn't die on the roost, he was layin on his side just right in the middle of the pen & just by lookin at him, if he wasn't layin on his side, you would think, Dang, that's a good lookin bird. I don't have a clue.

so sorry. I have no idea.

So sorry for your loss. Last summer I had a 6 month old jersey Giant hen die very suddenly. We found her in the coop sitting in the shavings and it is as if she just laid her head down. Not a sign of any movement or seizure activity that they sometimes have at death. it was like she just died. I did a necropsy and the only thing we could find that appeared abnormal was in her heart. One of her atriums (parts of her heart ) was a huge clot. We assume this to be the cause of death. Sad though when it happens. You feel so helpless. Sorry again for the loss of your roo!!!
