If you have a decent HiFi system, plug in one of your microphone from your HiFi on a long lead that reaches the next room. Hold the microphone against the egg. Get someone to crank up the volume and listen. That is about the only thing I can come up with that is practical.

Is there a more foolproof way to tell if your egg is going to make it than candling? My first experience incubating we had a hard time determining through the candling process and eggs that we thought might make it explained to us the phrase "last one in is a rotten egg"...more like last one out. I'd like to incubate again but our first time was rough because we had one born not fully developed. I realize candling wouldn't help in that case but it would definitely prevent the rotten egg smell

We've done that and not to diminish your comment because I do appreciate it I was hoping that possibly a heartbeat could be heard

An egg fetal monitor. WOW! Think someone's also thought of ultrasound? Great photos now days. They've come a long way with great detail. Cost prohibited I'm sure.

Yep. Been using my Egg Buddy for at least four or five years now and it has saved quite a few peachicks. It is really great for very dark chicken eggs. I do find it best to reposition the egg if you get a dead reading to double-check that you are making good contact. That has surprised me a few times.
