Last night I went out to check on all my girls (14) and my 2 yo, Ms. Ginger, was dead. The day before when I visited, everyone seemed fine. She has been broody, but I didn’t think long enough for her to starve. All the other girls are just fine, Ginger didn’t have missing feathers, nothing that I can see as a cause. Suggestions? I’m just dumbfounded as to why, when all the ladies are happy and healthy.

Sorry for your loss. How hot has your coop been recently during the day? Dehydration could have been possible, but it would be best to get a necropsy byt the state poultry lab if you still have her body and can keep it cold, not frozen. Broody’s can get run down, and I alway make it a habit to remove them twice a day to get water or food if they want. Hens over two can have a higher incidence of reproductive disorders and cancer.
