Heartgard for Dogs

Has anyone noticed that Heartgard for dogs - ivermectin - is six times more expensive than the horse ivermectin (regardless of brand)?

Looks like my dogs will be eating the paste!
 
Pyrantel based dewormers are the oldest, cheapest and non rX products for horses.
Thank you for that info. I see it is also prescribed as an anti-parasitic for humans, just like Ivermectin. Readily available various places for horses. May just need to make the switch from Heartgard to a DIY Ivermectin/Pyranel cocktail.
 
Has anyone actually done this? I am considering getting ivermectin for sheep since it looks like the dose might be easier to get right. A vet bill just to get a heartworm rx isn’t in the budget right now. (We are up to date on shots, just out of heartgard.)
