Heat and drinking lots of water

Yep- Since that picture we have added a triangular sun shade off the front right corner for the warm months. Works great- air still gets through, and they still get shade.

We've got an under-the-coop area that's completely shaded after about 9am. The chickens like to go under there, scratch some shallow holes, and hunker down on the cool soil. Today peaked at 94F and about 105% humidity. The 11 ladies and one gent drank 1/2 gallon from the inside waterer and about 1.75L from the outside waterer. This is our first year raising chickens, and we're trying to make sure there's plenty of clean water available.

Can't even imagine that humidity with that temp!
Our gals found the sandbox in the yard today- dug in to the cool sand and were very happy -- until the sun made it to that area of the yard!

Oh that's nuthin'. July gets into triple-digits with even more humidity. (I don't know who's brilliant idea it was to site the Nation's Capitol on a swamp ...)

We will be keeping an eye on the chickies to make sure they don't overheat.
