We are in a heat wave, my turkeys are hot

I bought a kiddie pool for them cause I read in a magazine that they would go in it and cool off. My BBW stood in it once but hasn't since. She seems to be the hottest. She actually let me pour water over her with a bucket this a.m. Is there anything else that I should do for them? I let them out to free range thinking that they will find the coolest place and settle in for the day rather then keeping them in the cage.

My next issue is the flies in my coop. They are horrendous. I have been keeping it clean, and I have to fly bag traps out there. I bought some expensive natural stuff that was supposed to keep the flies down but it didn't do anything. Any ideas?

It's almost constantly hot here so we are learning fast.

First, find them shade in the outdoors where any natural breeze can benefit them. Then make sure that they have a water supply. After that, don't worry and let them sort themselves out. They're smart.

Flies worry you more than them. They like to catch them as a late snack. Other than that, normal cleaning is enough. Ours go crazy for the flying termites in the hot rainy season.

Your main job is to enjoy an iced beer (try it if you haven't already) and think about what wonderful, resourceful and perfect creatures are your turkeys. It's a tough assignment but someone has to do it.
