How heat / cold tolerant are the buff orpingtons and how do they lay in the heat / cold?

Buff is a color not a breed. Are you asking about Buff Orpingtons, Golden Buffs, Buff Cochins, Buff Brahmas, etc.? If you're asking about Buff Orpingtons, which is the most common buff breed, they are very cold tolerant, easily handling winter temperatures well below 0 F and are good layers compared to other breeds under those conditions. They do not handle heat as well. If your summer temperatures get much over 100 F, you might want to consider Australorps or one of the Mediterranean breeds instead.
