my 4 mo old girls, four of them, are already struggling with the heat. they have a huge run, plenty of shade & are panting & dropping their wings. i put a mister out there for them today. i think i'm going to have to use a mister everyday & keep a section of ground moist at all times for them.
i'm hoping i can stay ahead of this & i don't lose my pretty ladies to the Texas summer.
in their coop i have a fan. i'm hoping it will be enough.
why don't they shed all that down? i wish i could brush them like i do my dogs & cat

I find that having an area of coarse damp sand helps them. They will lay on top of it. Make sure it stays damp and in the shade. Also spraying the grass (if they have any in the run) cools them as they walk about.

If you have no grass then just spray the ground. Mine like to paddle and scratch about in a the small puddles. I like to keep half the run dry so they have a choice.

The best thing my chickens like is crunchy cabbage or lettuce right out of the fridge. Its nice and cool for them and has lots of cool water inside.

Finally you can but ice in the water.

I tried freezing plastic bottles of water for them and laying them in the run, but they were not interested in them at all.

Shade, airflow, and plenty of fresh water that isn't out in the sun getting hot. They'll make it. Folks have been keeping chickens in Texas for a long, long time.

It's getting hot here in Florida too. Come June the air will be thick with humidity as well, but that's just our normal summer weather.
