Other tips to keep chickens cool in 85°+ heat

The most immediate short-term solution is as others said already: a pop-up shade tent like this to keep the sun off them during the heat of the day.

You could also just stick a big piece of plywood over the top, and another one leaned up against the west-facing side to block the direct afternoon (3-6pm) sun.

for 90+ degree weather you want DEEP shade.
This means at least 2 layers of a permeable barrier (shade cloth + tree leaves) or 1 SOLID barrier (a piece of wood)

I’m in Texas, where it’s highs of 95-98, and humidity at 70-80%.

My coop and run is under a mature tree, and I have a solid plywood wall built up to block the afternoon sun. They pant and cluster in the deepest shade, but I’ve never lost one to heatstroke.

Remember that the heat of the air FEELS about 10-20 degrees hotter when the sun’s rays can strike directly. Keeping the sun from touching them goes a LONG way.
