I'd go with metal. Mounted properly, meaning by something other than the clamp, it should be just fine. If you're brooding inside, a 100W light will be plenty. Matter of fact, after the first week or two, you can even just use a 60W lamp. If they aren't outside at 4 weeks, just use a 40W lamp. I only used two 100W lamps on week olds when it was snowing outside. Reason for two is in case one went out during the night. I shut the second one off in the day and they were just fine. I've never used a "heat lamp".
