So my broody hen stopped sitting on her eggs yesterday. She has four baby chicks but seven didn't hatch. I am buying a heat lamp tonight to make an attempt at hatching some eggs, but I know that it is a long shot. I am hoping somebody with experience with heat lamps can give me an idea of how far the light bulb should be from the eggs. I doubt the eggs will hatch, but I would rather make an effort to save them than not try at all. Any help would be great or just general heat lamp knowledge. Thanks!

Candle the eggs first to see if there are viable chicks in there. LED flashlight in a closet works great. You should see the little bugger moving around in there.

Never done the light bulb thing. The Little Giant incubators are $50 at TSC and work great. Grab one if you plan on hatching more chicks. Lots of DIY incubators on youtube.com
