heat lamp questions

We do what mountain orchard suggested... we put the lamp so it only covers about 1/4 of the area so they have a cool place to hang.

I live in FL so the days are hot hot but our mornings and nights are still about 70. I have been going home at lunch to turn off the light so they can have morning warm from the lamp still.

I use a tabletop lamp dimmer with any heat lamp, that way I can dial it down as they need less heat. I also tend to use 125 watt heat lamps, or regular 60/100 watt incandescent bulbs.

I set up the box so only one side is affected by the heat lamp. The other side is cool. I notice the chicks moving between both sides so i think they are comfortable.

I'm not trying to jack the thread as well, however I'm also on my first batch of chicks & found the heating pad way easy & they get a good nights sleep without a light shining in their face.
