How can I tell if they’re cold and the plate is too high? When they’re standing, their heads are near the plate but I’m afraid if they lay down they’re too far from it. I’m using the TSC brooder plate/heater.

Is the back lower than the front?
I'd drop it one more notch all the way around making sure the back is lower so they can go to the back if they want the heat closer to them.
Raise it up as they grow.

Great idea. I will try to lower one side so they have the option of getting closer.
