hi! in sacromento we are going to have a heat wave where a week or so will be in the 100s even up to 115… i’m worried about my three chickens in the heat. they have lots of shade, a mister, a fan, two waters(one with electrolytes), and a tray that i put ice in with bricks. i also give them frozen fruit on these days. is there anything else i can do for them? should i be worried?

yesterday was one of those 110 degree days.

the birds clustered in the shade under a large bush.

I moved a water bowl there and also a frying pan that needed cleaning.

At about 7, the coop/ garage was still broiling.

BUT if I wait too long, they go roost somewhere else - and then they are vulnerable to predators.

So I let them in the garage. It was about 100.

They were open mouth breathing very hard, Alarmingly so.

I put a sprinkler on the roof of the garage coop, but it went too far and got water on an outdoor desk that had a laptop on it, so I stopped doing that around 1 PM - right when it needed it.

I also open both garage doors in the early morning, to help it cool down.

I think one of the best things you can do is to go in the coop - at the peak of the heat. That way you know what the birds are dealing with, you can see and feel their distress.

Today I might try feeding them in the house, in the Utility Room, during the late afternoon early evening hours when we are waiting for the coop to cool off.
