HEAT?!

Yep, we're in South Florida and we have chicks that will be three weeks old on Wed. We have not finished the coop yet, and they still stay inside at night, but I have been taking them out to a shady, plant filled area with six foot fence that is blocked off and safe. I have been taking them out early and bringing them in by around 11 am, and keeping them in until around 4:30 in the afternoon. They are getting big and are pretty ticked off having to stay inside when they love running around, but they DO pant in the heat and they are still so young.

I have been envisioning a fan with ice, so this gallon jug with fan is a great idea and we will be using it! I am also rethinking the coop and think we will have a day run on the shady part of the house. It is REALLY hot here this week.

Thanks for the tips.

I used the Red-neck AC yesterday...Worked great! They all huddled in front of it and weren't panting nearly as bad. Yesterday was the hottest day yet I think. Had to be at least 95 in the shade! The chickens faired well...cant say the same for me though. I was installing a privacy fence and around 2 o'clock I suddenly stopped sweating, my entire abdomen cramped up, I got dizzy and almost passed-out. When I got into the house I vomited, Alot. Then had a MASSIVE head-ache. So I quit for the day, now I only have half my fence done. Gonna try again today...it's overcast today and might rain they say.

You need to be REALLY careful. From what you describe, you came close to a heatstroke. Once you've experienced one, you're much more susceptible to it recurring. Take care of yourself !
