FINALLY got a decent picture for you....

I fill the dog dish with water and just set the water directly into it, letting it overflow as needed.

The lower water warms up, heating the upper water. It doesn't take much heat to keep it thawed out.

What is the best way to heat water in Winter when it gets below -40

Let me give you an Idea to ponder. When its that cold, and you are behind the shed taking a leak, it creates a stalagmite.

Cold like that is surreal. A bizarre other world of no sound what so ever. All animals are hunkered down. People talk of quiet places but experiencing no sound is disquieting. The only sound you hear is the loud crunch crunch of your foot falls echoing into the void and your lungs have a searing sensation if you overexert yourself getting the frozen doors open on the car in the morning.
