Heated waterer? How do you keep your water thawed?

What do you put on top to transfer heat? It's a more efficient design, less heat escaping through the sides and focused upward, unlike a cookie tin heater which wastes alot of energy through the sides. Mine is a similar design but taller, holds a 5 gallon bucket within the insulated box.

I just change the frozen water out 2 times a day and replace it with warm water.

Here, too, but I stay at home with my kids so I have the luxury of checking on them quite frequently. I pour hot water in the dish a few times a day.

When I used rubber feed tubs for winter water, I used bird bath heaters in them. They worked great but I quit that method when I realized the roosters were dipping their wattles in the water and ended up getting frostbitten when the water on the wattles froze.
