I'd help you out! Hey, tell me more of this cookie tin heater. I need something quick!

quoting myself here, I searched cookie tin heater and wow! that is simple, inexpensive and easy! I'm gonna go get me some cookies right nao!

I've found that style of waterer very difficult to clean, so I've bought 15 gallon pail heaters - the kind for bird baths or horse watering pails. Works like a charm and sells for about $15.

I just use the heated buckets(for horses). I fill it up and top it off every day and then clean it out when it gets dirty. I put an old stump beside it so they can hop up and reach the water.

I didn't get around to setting it up yet though and it got to a high of 26 today. It's 20 degrees right now and falling.

When you use the dog bowls can you set them right in the shavings or do you need to put something under them. I tried setting them on blocks, but they were so tall the chickens couldn't reach them. Right now I have a heat lamp over the water, but worry about the fire hazard of heat lamps in the barn. Thanks for any info.

Just an update on my Farm Innovations heated waterer. As I said in my earlier post I was cleaning out ice twice a day. I pulled the new one (1month old), let it thaw out and took the bottom off to check out why it was not heating. I removed the bottom it was full of water. The thermostat was all corroded along with the wiring connectors. This tells me it had been leaking since new. Why it didn't blow the GFI I don't know. I suspect this is what is wrong with my 1 year old unit. I am going to e-mail the company just to let them know what I had found. I doubt this is the first time this has happened. I also don't believe if this kind of unit was tested before sale they never found this problem. I can't be the only lucky one in the country. I bought the 5 gallon steel waterer and am waiting on the heated base I had to order. Not a heated base to be found in my area. Good luck to you all with your ice problems. John

I also have a base heater for the metal fount. I put a ceramic floor tile between the base of the plastic jug and the element. no problems yet

That ceramic floor tile's a good idea.

I like the cookie tin idea also, but went with the store bought "little giant" metal base version because it has a thermostat which turns it on and off as needed.

I use a 1 gallon plastic waterer in the coop, set inside a large pyrex pie plate on top of the heater.

Happy
