heating hens in eastern Ontario during fall/winter

It appears we are in the same neck of the province. some of ours were out in the rain for most of the day. when they came in to see what treats i had they just shook off the water and then jumped up on the roost. Her under layers of feathers were perfectly dry. So I don't think they will have a problem if it is like Pat says dry and draft free.

Thanks so much for the info. What I decided to do tonight was kinda give them some radiant heat for a couple of hours to just dry them out. Now I will just turn off the heat and let them do the rest.

Someone does. And everyone downwind of the coal-fired plants that still supply a large fraction of Ontario's electricity BREATHES your hydro bill ;>

Really, there are FAR more practical ways of keeping water liquid than to try to keep the whole darn coop that temperature, up here.

Pat

actually no... my hydro is generated by a hydro electric dam .. no coal fired plants supply my hydro

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guelph_Lake

the dam produces hydro and sells it back to "the grid" aka Ontario hydro

Sorry to digress from the original topic of the thread, but surely you don't seriously think that makes your electric use consequence-free???

The more you use, the less is available to be used by others to reduce the use of coal-fired plants. (That is, the more you sponge up, the less is left to sell onward to Hydro One, and thus the more coal-fired electricity Hydro One must use)

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread

the more hydro I use is my business.... if you were paying my hydro bill then fine... but you are not and i am not sucking power from a coal fired plant so really i dont care...

if it was from a coal fired plant do i care ... nope...

i leave my computers on all the time, i leave my lights on, i leave my tv's on... cause thats my choice.

it sounds like i am throwing attitude but i am not... this is how i choose to live my life... and i am not going to bend to be more PC for anyone

Okey-dokey then. Gotcha.

Please consider me to *not* be addressing *you* in my posts on this thread, then. What I say has nothing to do with your personal situation, I am only speaking to EVERYONE ELSE considering heating their coop for totally-frivolous-and-unnecessary reasons, and who might actually CARE what affect their actions have on other people in the world. For whom my remarks still stand.

Enjoy yourself,

Pat

Pat is right, of course, and she is a reasonable and properly outspoken woman! Thank you Pat! It is not just "PC" to recognize that we are all in this together and to try to figure out what is and then to do the right thing. I think that's why a lot of us (not all, of course) are keeping chickens, at least in part. Hey Pat, I'm a big fan!

Leaving aside the question of the use of power from whatever source, I wouldn't want to pay for it in my situation, and I firmly believe keeping chickens too warm is doing them a disservice.

its not a matter right vs. wrong... its how she chooses to do things... well i choose to do things different

and for the ones who are keeping chickens for something to do... like myself, and i really dont appreciate anyone trying tell me that i am wrong for how i choose to do things

For the record, I agree with you 100% on *this*

It is not a matter of right or wrong per se (except that what I say *is*, at the end of the day, *factually* right, but that's not what you're talking about).

It is a free country (either one of them

) and we each do get to CHOOSE how to lead our lives, and what actions to take.

My point in my most-recent posts on this thread is just to make certain people are not kidding themselves about the consequences of their choices.
